Useful Electrical Information

This is the place to put any electrical related stuff that may be useful to others in the future, for example... pinouts.

Fridge 1: Grunhilda

4K Dip Station

Electrical Pinouts

example D-sub connectors

DE-9 (9 way D-sub miniture)

Used for 12/15V DC and/or 5/6V DC. An Uwe approved standard pinout which keeps ~12V and ~5V supplies separate.

Pin Voltage Note typical use
1 +12/15V First 12V supply (positive) +12V
2 +5/6V First 5V supply (positive gives +5V) +5V
3 0V First 5V supply (negative - normally tied to 4 in device) 0V(5V supply)
4 +5/6V Second 5V supply (positive - normally tied to 3 in device) 0V(5V supply)
5 0V Second 5V supply (negative – gives -5V) -5V

6 -12/15V Second 12V supply (negative) -12V
7 0V First 12V supply (negative - tied to 8) 0V(12V supply)
8 0V Second 12V supply (positive - tied to 7) 0V(12V supply)
9 GND Shielding of cable and ground connection to power supply chassis GND

Typical serial cable colour coding (Note there is no actual standard!)

Wire   Colour
1   black
2   brown
3   red
4   orange
5   yellow
6   green
7   blue
8   purple
9   white

This is easy to remember when you realise it is the resistor colour code: black, brown, then the colours of the rainbow and white, simples!
